The Albian Blackleaf Formation and the overlying Cenomanian to Turonian lower part of the Frontier formation in Beaverhead and Madison counties, Montana, were deposited within or east of the southwestern Montana fold-and-thrust belt. The Blackleaf Formation is subdivided into four mappable lithofacies units. The Albian age for this formation was determined from fossil bivalves and palynomorphs. The lower part of the Frontier Formation is composed of lithic sandstone, conglomerate, and subordinate mudstone and shale.
