Limestone Injection with Multistage Burners (LIMB) for use in sulfur dioxide (SO/sub 2/) and nitrogen oxide (NO/sub x/) control for coal-fired boilers has performance goals of 50 to 60% reduction for retrofit systems, and achievement of New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) for application on new utility boilers. The cost is to be significantly lower than that for flue gas desulfurization (FGD), which is the major control technology alternative. The Environmental Protection Agency developed a cost model of LIMB to estimate and compare costs under a variety of assumptions and conditions. The authors present an economic analysis which compares LIMB, limestone FGD, and lime spray drying for both new construction and retrofit cases. 7 references, 3 figures, 4 tables.
