Face to face longwall moves at Inland Steel Coal's Lancashire No. 25

Journal Article · · Min. Eng. (Littleton, Colo.); (United States)
OSTI ID:5855785
The paper discusses the recovery of a longwall unit after completion of a panel and its installation at another face in a Pennsylvania bituminous coal mine. The seam averaged 1.07 m in height. Drainage is about 13.25 million l/day of water which causes the predominantly fireclay floor to deteriorate, making it extremely difficult to move equipment. Support removal is accomplished by pulling the 5.44 t shields out under their own power and transporting them by track 8.05 km to the next longwall panel. Methods of improving the operation are considered.
