Conductor vibration field tests on Bonneville Power Administration's extra high voltage dc and ac lines

Book ·
OSTI ID:5855746
Transmission lines exposed to steady, unobstructed, transverse winds, with velocities up to about 15 mph, are subject to Aeolian vibration and possible subsequent fatigue damage. For conductors up to about 1.6 inch diameter, the behavior under vibrating conditions is fairly well understood for both single and bundle configurations. However, little is known up to this time of the behavior of larger single and twin conductors. The installation of armor rods, spacers, dampers, or combinations of these during these tests, had shown that the severity of vibration may be reduced 70 to 95%. This is considered by most investigators to be an acceptable level of vibration protection. The conductors, in most cases, will then be able to withstand an infinite number of stress reversible without fatigue damage.
