Dual-wall drill pipe
This patent describes a dual-wall drill pipe section for a drill string. It is formed from a plurality of serially connected drill pipe sections, for use in drilling in earth formations. The drill pipe section consists of: an outer pipe having an internally threaded box end, an externally threaded pin end, internal shoulder means extending inwardly from the bore of the outer pipe and recess means formed in the bore; an inner pipe adapted to be concentrically disposed within and telescopingly movable inwardly and outwardly of the outer pipe, external shoulder means extending outwardly of the outer periphery of the inner pipe and being engageable with the internal shoulder means for axially locating the inner pipe within the outer pipe and for supporting the inner pipe in the outer pipe when the section is in an upright position; detent means associated with the inner and outer pipe for releasably retaining the inner pipe within the outer pipe and permitting relative axial displacement of the pipe upon application of predetermined opposed axial forces to the pipe, the detent means including a plurality of generally v-shaped leaf springs, an end of one arm of each spring being secured to the outer periphery of the inner pipe, the end of the other arm of each spring being abuttingly and slidingly engageable with the outer periphery of the inner pipe and the apex of each spring means being spaced from the periphery and frictionally engageable with the recess means; and spacer means secured to each end of the periphery of the inner pipe and being abuttingly engageable with the bore of the outer pipe for maintaining concentricity between the inner and outer pipes; the spacer means including a plurality of angularly spaced longitudinally extending plates extending outwardly from the periphery and each having a longitudinal surface abuttingly engageable with the bore of the outer pipe.
