A highly dispersed titania-supported Os catalyst was prepared by the ion-exchange method. FT-IR was used to study CO chemisorption on the reduced catalyst. The IR spectra revealed two strong bands at 2129 and 2055 cm/sup -1/ and a shoulder at ca. 1990 cm/sup -1/. The frequencies and shapes of the bands are independent of the adsorption pressure, i.e., surface coverage. The band at 2129 cm/sup -1/ was desorbed at 350/sup 0/C, and the other two bands were desorbed at the same temperature, 400/sup 0/C. Results of isotope exchange between C/sup 16/O and C/sup 18/O suggest that the band at 2129 cm/sup -1/ could be from the surface tricarbonyl species, Os(CO)/sub 3/, and the other two bands are from the surface dicarbonyl species, Os(CO)/sub 2/. No bridged or linear carbonyl species was observed. By comparison with the osmium carbonyl clusters, the Os particle size is about ten atoms and the average coordination number is about 4.8.
