The ouster of the Shah by the Ayatollah Khomeini in Iran has far-reaching consequences for the rest of the Middle East and, by extension, to the rest of the world. The implications of the new alliance between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Palestine Liberation Organization are examined. The role of Palestinians and of Shi'a poulations in the neighboring Gulf states, the economic consequences of Iran's new orientation, and its immediate military implications for the Arab-Israeli conflict and for present and future conflict in the Gulf area are discussed. The crux of the problems now lies in Saudi Arabia, according to the author. The Saudi position of the Arab-Israeli conflict has now been stiffened, and Saudi fears increased, in ways that bear directly on Saudi-American relations and on the security of the vital oil resources of Saudi Arabia. The article also discusses the Iranian revolution's effect on the security of the oil sources and transportation in the other Arab, oil-producing countries. The author makes a few recommendations about the future US involvement in the Mideast.
