Mercuric method determines drilling-fluid chlorides

The classical method of chloride ion determination uses silver nitrate as the titrant. The yellow to brick-red endpoint color change in this titration is difficult to detect visually and therefore a great deal of variability in Cl/sup -/ content often occurs between operators. A large error in chloride ion content may lead to incorrect conclusions about mud properties. A drastic change in mud properties typically results in serious drilling problems. Determination of chloride ion employing the mercuric nitrate method is simple, fast, reliable, and above all, accurate. This method is being proposed as an adjunct or replacement to the standard silver nitrate titration presently used in API.
