This paper is concerned with fast determination of generation-shedding in the transient emergency state of the power system. A simple procedure is first developed to calculate the critical partial energy of the individual machine and the associated partial energy margin. The partial energy function is then applied to the transition stability assessment of a power system subjected to a large disturbance. Following this assessment, an energy-based analytical sensitivity method is presented. The sensitivity of the partial energy margin at any instant to the change of generation level has been analytically derived in a closed form. It offers a one-shot calculation for quantitative estimation of generation that must be shed to maintain system stability. The proposed sensitivity technique and procedure are illustrated with the Taipower system with reasonably accurate results.
