A device for controlling an internal combustion engine having an air intake passage and a throttle valve provided in the intake passage on the basis of the opening degree of the throttle valve, and air flow through the intake passage is described comprising: an air flow sensor for detecting the amount of suction air flowing through the intake passage of the engine: a throttle sensor for detecting the opening degree of the throttle valve provided in the intake passage; calibration means for calibrating the opening degree of the throttle valve when the engine is running under predetermined operational conditions.
