Control of cross-linking reaction rate of aqueous fracturing fluids

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5848201
A composition of matter which initiates a time controlled cross-linking reaction of aqcueous polysaccharide fracturing fluid is described. The composition consists of: an aqueous solution of a cross-linking compound which supplies ions of transition metals selected from the group consisting of zirconium, hafnium, chromium, and titanium in a cross-linking time controller elected from polyamine cross-linking rate accelerators which control the rate at which the cross-linking compound promotes cross-linking of the polysaccharide. A method of controlling the cross-linking reaction of an aqueous fracturing fluid in fracturing of subterranean formations which comprises: mixing in an aqueous solution a polysaccharide gelling agent, a cross-linking compound which supplies ions of transition metals consisting of the group consisting of zirconium, hafnium, chromium, and titanium and a cross-linking rate controller elected from polyamine cross-linking rate accelerators to control the rate at which the cross-linking compound cross-links with the polysaccharide gelling agent.
