Heil-Quaker Corp. has introduced a condensing gas furnace that has efficiencies up to 96%. Based on the design of the company's conventional high-efficiency furnace, the new model adds a stainless steel secondary heat exchanger and a unique combustion-air blower. Composed of aluminium fins on a stainless steel tube, the heat-exchanger coil extracts all but the last 4% of the Btu content of the input fuel from the flue gases. The exhaust gases and condensates are drawn from the heat exchanger by the combustion-air blower, which acts as an air regulator by bringing in only the correct amount of air necessary for maximum combustion efficiency. The underlying operational feature of the design is that the unit operates with a negative pressure in the primary and secondary heat exchangers.
