The similarity and differences in the mechanisms for the nitration of arenes by nitronium ions in sulfuric acid and by acetyl nitrate in tetrachloromethane were established on the basis of a study of the kinetics and substrate and positional selectivity in these reactions. In both systems, there is presumably an initial slow step involving the formation of a charge transfer complex between the substrate and reagent. The mechanisms of the subsequent steps leading to the products differ significantly for polar and nonpolar media.
