The products of thermodesorption of methylpyridines adsorbed on a vanadium-molybdenum oxide catalyst surface contain, besides the pyridinealdehydes, significant amounts of pyridine. Under the conditions of catalytic oxidation the methylpyridines in the gas phase promote pyridinealdehyde desorption by inhibiting their decarbonylation. In the absence of oxygen in the gas phase, 3-pyridinealdehyde is formed from 3-methylpyridine in insignificant amounts, in contrast to 2- and 4-pyridinealdehydes, in the formation of which the lattice oxygen of the catalyst takes part.
