Synthesis and catalytic properties of products obtained by sulfiding ternary oxide compounds of Ni, Mo, and Al in hydrogenation and hydrodesulfurization reactions
It has been shown that coprecipitation of Ni, Mo, and Al salts in an alkaline medium with subsequent heat treatment will yield an amorphous nickel aluminomolybdate with the composition Ni(Al/sub x/MoO/sub 4+1.5x/) (x = 0.2-1.0), which, when heated to 973 K, crystallizes into a phase that is isostructural with ..beta..-NiMoO/sub 4/ and is stable after cooling. In an acidic medium, a nickel heteropolymoybdate is obtained with the composition Ni(AlMo/sub 6/O/sub 24/H/sub 7/); this breaks down with the segregation of NiMoO/sub 4/, Al/sub 2/(MoO/sub 4/)/sub 3/, and MoO/sub 3/ at temperatures greater than or equal to 773 K. The double molybdate of Ni and Al that is formed upon fusion of the components (1313 K0 breaks down upon cooling below 1178 K, with the segregation of ..cap alpha..-NiMoO/sub 4/, MoO/sub 3/, and Al/sub 2/(MoO/sub 4/)/sub 3/. The catalytic properties of the products obtained by sulfiding the nickel aluminomolybdate, the nickel heteropolymolybdate, NiMoO/sub 4/, Al/sub 2/(MoO/sub 4/)/sub 3/, NiO, MoO/sub 3/, and supported Al-Ni-Mo catalysts have been compared in reactions of o-xylene hydrogenation and thiphene hydrodesulfurization. It is concluded that the maximum activity and selectivity in the hydrodesulfurization reaction are shown by the product from sulfiding the ternary oxide compound of Ni, Mo, and Al, which does not have any bulk analog and which consists of conjugated fragments of aluminum molybdate and nickel aluminate on the surface of the aluminum oxide support.
