Detectability of hydrogen recombination radio lines in compact radio galaxies and quasars

In compact radio sources identified with galaxies and quasars and having spectra with a high-frequency turnover (..nu../sub 0/> or approx. =5 GHz), the recombination lines of excited hydrogen might be observable in absorption if the falloff in the spectrum toward lower frequencies results from free-free absorption of the radiation of the compact source by surrounding ionized hydrogen.
