Durability of marker materials for nuclear waste isolation sites

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5840580
The Department of Energy's Office of Nuclear Waste Isolation is examining all aspects of establishing an underground repository for the disposal of nuclear wastes. The Human Interference Task Force (HITF) has been created to investigate the problems connected to the closure and final marking of a filled repository. The task of the HITF is to devise a method of warning future generations, who may or may not have records of the repository's contents, not to mine or drill at that site unless they are aware of the consequences of their actions. Since the likelihood of human interference should be minimized for up to several thousand years, a durable marker system must be devised. Accordingly, this paper reviews the probable long-term performance of materials that might be used for nuclear waste isolation sites. 58 references.
