Strength and failure behavior of short fiber composite material. Annual progress report, January 1, 1982-December 31, 1982
Major accomplishments are the experimental characterization of the strength and variability of carbon and glass fibers from tests on single fibers and loose bundles of fibers; the experimental measurements of the strength and variability of impregnated tows of carbon and glass fibers; the development of statistical procedures for estimating fiber variability from tests on single fibers, loose bundles and impregnated tows; the experimental characterization of the strength of aligned short-fiber carbon, glass, and hybrid carbon/glass composites; the development of Monte Carlo simulation technique for modelling continuous, short and hybrid fiber composites; the development of a probabilistic theory for the strength of short fiber composites with particular attention to matrix and interface damages; the statistical analysis of multiple fracture in 0/sup 0//90/sup 0//0/sup 0/ glass-fiber/epoxy-resin laminates; the development of the theoretical basis for the enhancement of strength in composites by reinforcing them with previously-stressed fibers; and the experimental study of the influence of prestressed loose bundle of carbon fibers on composite strength.
