X-ray pulsar beam patterns for emission by magnetized plasma with vacuum polarization

Angular distributions of the x rays emitted by a homogeneous, optically thick, strongly magnetized plasma are calculated for a wide range of photon energies E and plasma electron densities N/sub e/ appropriate to the emission regions of x-ray pulsars. Vacuum polarization will significantly alter the beam patterns. The beamwidth (directivity), a nonmonotonic function of E, depends on the inclination theta/sub B/ of the magnetic field to the normal, and is subject to major changes. If theta/sub B/not =0/sup 0/, 90/sup 0/, the beam will be markedly asymmetric over a wide range in E, and the phases of maximum and minimum flux will vary with E.
