A diverter spool adapted for use in a drilling fluid return system is described comprising, a diverter housing adapted for connection with a casing string at a position below sea level, the diverter housing having an axial internal bore for carrying drilling fluid and a radial outlet passage between the bore and the exterior of the housing, a diverter piston means having a sleeve slidable disposed adjacent the radial outlet passage, the piston means movable relative to the outlet passage for the outlet passage for closing the outlet passage to the sea in a closed position and to open the bore of the housing to the sea when the diverter piston means is in the open position.
