The survey of the aluminum segment of the materials community was designed to accomplish several objectives supportive of the total technology assessment: to gain insight into the nature of the existing materials information system, and the need for a new or improved system; to gain insight into the functional needs and the materials information management needs of a new or improved system, as a complement to surveys of senior policymakers; to test the general capabilities of the existing system; to evaluate data base quality; and to determine implications of the present form and uses of these data bases - to help assess the real world feasibility of the functional system concept.
