A cylindrical proportional counter with six anode wires was designed and tested. The electron drift velocity was greater than that of similar single-anode, coaxial proportional counter, thus, allowing counting and position sensing of low-energy photons (<60 keV) at high count rates (>10/sup 5/ counts/s).
