Charleston - A cost-effective, unique coal terminal
In contrast to the hesitation of many others, under the leadership of Morgan Massey, A.T. Massey Coal Company forged ahead to acquire two sites for the construction of coal terminals, one at Newport News (Pier 9), Virginia, and the other on the Shipyard River in Charleston, South Carolina. The Charleston site met the following criteria: Access to Appalachia by both CSX and N and S Rail Lines. Existing dock. Existing ship unloader with potential for conversion to a shiploader. Available acreage for potential ground storage. Warm weather eliminates freeze proofing of coal. The facility, formerly a chemical plant supported by a ship unloading dock, was owned by the Etiwan and Burris Chemical Companies. It began operations in 1929. Massey exercised the option to purchase and acquired the property for $9 million in 1981. A feasibility study was conducted by ORBA Corporation of Fairfield, New Jersey. Subsequently, engineering commenced by the same firm on March 27, 1981.
