Since sharp oil-price increases began in the 1970s, consumers around the world have shifted to natural gas, causing a significant increase in gas consumption. Using International Energy Agency data for 1974-78 AGA identified the consumption sectors within nations of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Of the 17 gas users in the OECD, only the US decreased its overall gas consumption (by 8%). Industrial consumption rose sharply in Canada (32.3%) and the UK (18.6%), as well as in the small nations (up to 130.8%). Dramatic increases (over 60%) in commercial gas usage were recorded in West Germany, France, Belgium, and New Zealand. Residential gas consumption rose in all nations except Australia and New Zealand, where annual seasonal temperature variations masked any clear growth pattern. Gas used for power generation increased in West Germany, Italy, Japan, Australia, Austria, New Zealand, and Luxembourg. These statistics show that the natural gas option has become a popular national energy strategy and that most OECD nations - notably excluding the US - have made strong efforts to encourage the use of natural gas to displace imported oil.
