A low background study of Ge/sup 76/ neutrinoless double beta decay in the St. Gotthard tunnel

A high purity germanium detector has been run in an underground laboratory for a period of 6728 hours, giving a lower limit for the half-life of Ge/sup 76/ neutrinoless double beta decay of t/sub 1/2/ greater than or equal to 3.2 x 10/sup 22/ years (90% cl) or 6.2 x 10/sup 22/ years (68% cl).
