The mechanism of the oxidation of phenols and cyclohexene catalyzed by the ruthenium(IV)-oxo complexes has been studied using a variety of techniques, e.g. kinetics, /sup 18/O labeling, H/D kinetic isotope effects, and the appearance of reaction intermediates. Preliminary results of a series of studies that illustrate the mechanistic versatility of the Ru(IV)=O/sup 2+/ oxidant in this system are presented. 22 refs.
