The production and subsequent decay to muon and neutrino of the W intermediate vector boson has been observed in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Details of the CDF detector are given and event selection criteria are developed. A cross section times branching ratio, based on a sample of three W {yields} {mu}{nu} candidate events extracted from 27.2 {plus minus} 4.1 nb{sup {minus}1} of data taken in the 1987 collider run, is calculated to be {sigma}{sub W} x B{sub W{yields}{mu}{nu}} = 0.59{sup +0.93}/{sub {minus}0.32}({plus minus}0.09) nb which is consistent with current theoretical predictions.
