Peace River in-situ project: current operations and future outlook
The Peace River In Situ Project located near the town of Peace River in NW. Alberta is in its fourth year of operation. This pilot project is a field test of a laboratory developed pressure cycle steam drive process--a process that is indicated to recover ca 60% of the initial bitumen in place. Pilot objectives are to (1) test the reservoir performance; (2) improve the techniques required to produce crude bitumen from the oils sands; and (3) provide data for the evaluation of the economic feasibility of recovering crude bitumen by a steam drive process. The current and expected future performance of the recovery process are highlighted as well as the various operational aspects of the project. It also addresses those hurdles that must be overcome before full-scale development can be undertaken.
