Intermediate-mass Higgs boson at hadron supercolliders
- Physics Department, University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin 53706 (US)
We study the inclusive production at future hadron supercolliders of the standard-model Higgs boson in the intermediate-mass region ({ital M}{sub {ital W}}{approx lt}{ital M}{sub {ital H}}{approx lt}2{ital M}{sub {ital Z}}) and its subsequent decay into two virtual {ital W} bosons that decay leptonically. Backgrounds from continuum {ital W} pair production and from top-quark pair production with semileptonic decays are investigated. We conclude that the Higgs-boson signal may be observed via the decay {ital H}{r arrow}{ital W}{sup *}{ital W*}{r arrow}({ital l}{bar {nu}}{sub {ital l}})({ital {bar l}}{prime}{nu}{sub {ital l}{prime}}) at the Superconducting Super Collider for 145 GeV{lt}{ital M}{sub {ital H}}{approx lt}2{ital M}{sub {ital Z}} if {ital m}{sub {ital t}}{gt}150 GeV. Here {ital W}{sup *} denotes an on- or off-shell {ital W} boson.
