Possibilities of forming narrow, weakly divergent ultrasonic beams

The possibilities of forming narrow, weakly divergent ultrasonic beams by means of various types of piezoelectric transducers are analyzed. Special attention is given to transducers that have a nonuniform distribution of acoustic pressure from the radiating surface. It is shown that transducers for which this distribution has the form of a Bessel function J/sub 0/ will produce narrow, weakly divergent ultrasonic beams in both the near and far zones.
