Excited states in [sup 77]Br were investigated via the reactions [sup 75]As([alpha],2[ital n])[sup 77]Br and [sup 73,74]Ge([sup 7]Li,[ital xn])[sup 77]Br at beam energies of 27 and 35 MeV, respectively. On the basis of coincidence and angular distribution data of the [gamma] rays the known level sequences of positive and negative parity were extended to tentative spins of 25/2[h bar], and a new decay sequence beginning at spin and parity of (17/2[sup [minus]]) was found. This new sequence is discussed in terms of the 3-quasiparticle configuration ([pi][ital g][sub 9/2][direct product][nu][ital g][sub 9/2][direct product][nu] ([ital p][sub 1/2],[ital p][sub 3/2],[ital f][sub 5/2])). Moreover, the irregularity found in the moments of inertia at [h bar][omega][approx]0.4 MeV for the negative-parity band is attributed to a [ital g][sub 9/2] quasiproton alignment.
