Artificial composites for high temperature applications

Book ·
OSTI ID:5832631
This book describes developments and advances in artificial composites for high temperature applications. The current level of activity in the field is assessed: outstanding problems and research directions for the future are identified. For increased efficiency in heat engines, both automotive and aerospace industries are demanding materials capable of withstanding higher temperatures along with increased load-carrying and fracture toughness. The use of fiber and whisker reinforcement of superalloys and ceramics - to form artificial composites - appears very promising. It has been shown that with proper reinforcement, the use temperature of superalloys can be increased by 100/sup 0/C and the fracture toughness of ceramics an be increased by as factor of 2 - 10. This book, then, reviews the development of artificial composites containing fibers or whiskers in metallic or ceramic matrices for high temperature applications.
