Title: Proton source in the atom injector for the AMBAL installation

Journal Article · · Instrum. Exp. Tech. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:5830179

The design and test results are described for a proton source for a quasistationary injector for fast hydrogen atoms in the AMBAL installation. The proton beam is extracted by a multislit four-electrode ion-optical system from a plasma emitter. The homogeneous emitter is provided by the plasma in an arc discharge on a cold cathode extended in an expander having a peripheral magnetic field. The ion beam from the source has a diameter of 13 cm, current 25 A, energy 25 keV, pulse length 0.1 sec, divergence 10/sup -2/ x 2 x 10/sup -2/ rad/sup -2/. The source gives a high content of protons accelerated to the full energy (> 90%).
