Mobile robots can go places where it is undesireable or unsafe for humans to go. With only a modest amount of on-board computer capability, a robot can accomplish important tasks without the intervention of a human operator. We have constructed a small robot that has autonomous navigation and steering capabilities. The technology developed and tested here will find eventual application on robots that must enter hazardous environments.
