Investigation of high spin states in 1p and 2sld shell nuclei via the (. cap alpha. ,/sup 2/He) reaction. [65 MeV: cross sections, transitions]

The (..cap alpha..,/sup 2/He) reaction was measured on 16 targets ranging from /sup 12/C to /sup 40/Ca in order to obtain an initial survey of this reaction. Large cross sections were found for transitions to states of (d/sub 5/2/)/sub 4//sup 2/,(d/sub 3/2/f/sub 7/2/)/sub 5/, and (f/sub 7/2/)/sub 6//sup 2/ character, resulting in the location of a number of 2n states, many of which were previously unknown. Spectra from the /sup 28/Si, /sup 26/Mg, and /sup 29/Si targets bombarded by alpha particles in the reaction (..cap alpha..,/sup 2/He) and binding energies for several configurations as a function of the mass of the final nucleus are shown. 3 references.
