A computational technique for the optimization of single-element instrumental neutron activation analysis has been proposed. ..gamma..-Ray spectra are predicted for typical sample compositions and values of response functions are obtained from the predicted spectra. This procedure is combined with simplex optimization to find optimum values for sample size and irradiation, decay, and counting times. Two response functions were examined, and the operation of the method was tested. Simplex optimization by advance prediction was found to be flexible and efficient. 26 references, 3 figures, 2 tables.
