Backbending in /sup 178/W

High spin states in /sup 178/W have been studied using the /sup 170/Er(/sup 12/C,4n) reaction and ..gamma..-ray techniques. The yrast band in /sup 178/W has been identified to spin 18. At this spin the moment of inertia curve shows backbending. The systematics of backbending in the tungsten isotopes is discussed.
