This paper covers the status of the Yucca Mountain Project's (YMP's) efforts to characterize and evaluate an underground geologic repository for the potential storage of high-level nuclear waste. The Yucca Mountain site is located in Nye County, Nevada, 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas and is being evaluated through many geologic studies, including drilling, trenching, and the initial phases of an underground Exploratory Studies Facility (ESF). The paper also focuses on the appropriate use of geotechnical and engineering information in evaluations of compliance with regulatory criteria. An application for licensing a geologic repository will require predictions of groundwater travel times of both 1000 and 10,000 yr and an engineered barrier system (including waste package) that meets time-related regulatory criteria on waste containment and isolation. The appropriate use of geotechnical and engineering information in evaluations of compliance with criteria covering such time frames presents an unprecedented challenge to geoscientists and engineers.
