Thermal analysis of UF/sub 6/ cylinder inside a protective overpack

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5824800
To ensure safety, UF/sub 6/ cylinders containing reactor grade UF/sub 6/ are transported in a protective overpack. The overpack is designed to protect the UF/sub 6/ cylinder in a fire at least 1/2 hour in case of an accident. A thermal analysis was performed on a 76.2 cm diameter cylinder in a protective overpack to simulate various accident cases and to compare with available experimental data. The analysis included the thermal performance of both a damaged and undamaged overpack as well as the effect of moisture in the overpack. The result indicates that an average cylinder surface temperature inside an overpack, after exposing to a fire for 1 hour, is still below the level where appreciable UF/sub 6/ phase change would occur that could cause a cylinder to rupture.
