The accumulation of large quantities of spent nuclear fuels is a serious problem for maintaining safeguards. Therefore, assay of the fissile content becomes very important in confirming depletion status for storage, transportation, shielding, and reprocessing. It is also essential to separately assay the plutonium fissile isotopes ([sup 239]Pu and [sup 241]Pu) from the [sup 235]U in spent fuel, such as mixed-oxide fuel and heavy-water reactor fuel because these plutonium isotopes could be used to make a nuclear explosive.
