A study is made of the stability with respect to barlike perturbations of balanced elliptic disks with quadratic gravitational potential in binary systems and in a spheroidal halo. It is shown that in binary systems elongated disks and also nearly circular compressed disks are aperiodically unstable. Strongly compressed disks are stable if the mass ratio is large: M/M(2) or M(2)/M greater than about 30 at intermediate mass ratios there is oscillatory instability. Disks in a spheroidal halo are stabilized with respect to barlike perturbations if the gravitational potential of the halo exceeds half the disk's. 14 references.
