Acoustoelastic constants for bulk ultrasonic waves in oblique irradiation

The propagation of elastic waves in an initially isotropic medium at an angle relative to the direction of the deforming forces is investigated. Expressions are derived for the acoustoelastic constants for longitudinal and shear waves under the action of normal and tangential stresses, and the directions of enhancement or nonexistence of the acoustoelastic effect are determined. It is shown that acoustical methods offer the conceptual possibility of experimentally obtaining tomograms of an arbitrary stress-strain of structural materials.
