PCB-contaminated oil problem less than formerly thought, according to survey

A survey of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contamination of insulating oils now reduces previous estimates five times to 100 million gallons, which could be replaced with a one-year supply of mineral oil. The new data shows that the contaminated oil can be disposed of instead of treated and reused. The data accuracy is estimated at plus-or-minus 20%. The survey also shows that utilities account for only 162 million pounds of PCB. The remainder of the 1.4 billion pounds produced since 1929 is in nonutility transformers, fluorescent-light ballasts, and other equipment. 4 tables. (DCK)
