Commensurability, chaos, and the devil's staircase

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5818956
These lectures deal with the effects of the discrete lattice on modulated structures in solid state physics. The modulated structure could be a periodic lattice distortion, a sinusoidal or helical magnetic structure, staging of alkali metals in graphite intercalation compounds, polytypism in crystal formation, or some other periodic arrangement. Models discussed include the 1d Ising model with long range antiferromagnetic interactions in a magnetic field, the 3d Ising model with competing interactions, and the discrete phi/sup 4/ model.
