An apparatus for using solar energy to melt ice at low ambient temperatures, particularly adapted for use in livestock watering systems, is disclosed. A solar energy collector is described which gathers and transmits heat into ice which has formed in a watering receptacle at ambient air temperatures of freezing or below.
