Mexican oil and gas

Extensive oil exploration after oil prices began rising led to the major discoveries in the Reforma, Campeche, and Chicontepec fields that will change Mexico from a net importer to an exporter as well as provide a base of economic development. Proved reserves grew rapidly after 1978, while probable and potential reserves are now estimated up to 250 billion barrels. Changes in reserves estimates, production, and imports of oil and gas are summarized in tables. Current policy limits exports and export destinations in an effort to expand Mexico's economy at a rate consistent with its ability to absorb foreign income. It is hoped that this policy of optimizing production and exports will slow inflation and allow job opportunities to develop in other industries that are more labor-intensive. 1 figure, 4 tables.
