The document provides state and local air agencies and other Clearinghouse users with citations to selected publications pertaining to health effects and risk assessment of toxic pollutants. These documents were published by the following four agencies: National Academy of Sciences, the World Health Organization, the National Cancer Institute of Occupational Safety and Health of the Centers for Disease Control. In selecting references for inclusion in the bibliography, emphasis was placed on documents published since 1974 which reported health effects of toxic or potentially toxic pollutants that can be emitted into the air and assessments of risks of these pollutants. Most documents focus on one or more toxic or potentially toxic chemicals, and a few focus on exposure to toxic substances in a particular industry. While ambient air exposure was the focus, references on occupational exposure and exposure via drinking water were also included. Summaries and compilations emphasizing analyses of information on pollutants rather than results of individual toxicity or health effects tests were included to keep the bibliography a manageable size.
