Drillers seek Alaska supergiant

Journal Article · · Offshore; (United States)
OSTI ID:5811049
An overview of Alaska's offshore oil activity is presented. In spite of disappointing results from industry's most expensive wildcat, most oil companies haven't given up in the search to locate an oil supergiant in Alaska's Beaufort Sea. Industry speculation is that the oil may have migrated, perhaps as far as 45 miles northwest. More tests are planned nearby. A well in Harrison Bay is believed to involve the same reservoir, source rocks and geological history as the Prudhoe Bay field 40 miles southeast of Sohio's drill site. In the Bering Sea, the federal government plans to hold the first lease sale in March for tracts in the Navarin Basin. A seawater treatment plant at Prudhoe Bay is expected to add 1.1 billion barrels of incremental recovery, in the hope of postponing Prudhoe's decline until the late 1980's and recovering close to 9.6 billion barrels of oil by about 2005-2010.
