Determining fracture orientation and formation permeability from pulse testing

It is often desirable to know the flow patterns created after a number of wells in a reservoir have been fractured. Pulse testing is one of the better techniques available to estimate some of the important formation properties and the orientation of the fracture, because it samples a large portion of the reservoir. Detailed procedures for the design and analysis of pulse testing of a vertically fractured well are presented. The procedures use the correlations relating dimensionless response amplitude and dimensionless cycle period to dimensionless time lag and the correlations of this study. The design procedure insures that the test falls within the effective range and that pressure gage sensitivity can be specified. In addition to determining the orientation of the vertical fracture, average formation permeability of the tested portion of the reservoir can be calculated using the analysis procedure. Hence, areal changes in permeability will not nullify results of the test, but instead can be detected from the analysis of the test. 11 references.
