Enhanced oil recovery. Coastal Oil and Gas specialization in hard-to-recover hydrocarbons

Knotty geology, spotty oil deposits, and an unusual injection program are adding up to what Coastal Oil and Gas Corp. hopes will be the recovery of an additional 1.1 million bbl of oil in the Panhandle (Red Cave) field in Texas. Throughout most of its production history, the field remained a gas field, accounting for several TCF of gas. Colorado Interstate Gas, Inc., a Coastal subsidiary, hit oil again in 1971 while looking for gas, but not enough to produce commercially. As oil began gaining more national importance, the company's oil wells, usually strippers producing less than 10 bopd, began to take on greater importance. The company began drilling 10 to 15 wells/yr in the field specifically for oil. By the end of 1980, Coastal had 250 producing wells with primary output totaling 2.5 million bbl or approximately 3.5% of the 166 million bbl estimated original oil in place. The focus of the company's present activity is tertiary recovery.
